About the Program

Herkimer has been offering women’s basketball since the campus opened in 1971 as an integral part of the student-athlete experience. The program has a rich history, winning Region III Championship four times (1979, 1980, 1994, 1996) and the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in eight times (1988, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2022).

This includes a Region III record, of 66 consecutive conference wins from 1993 to 1997. In recent years the team has made significant progress in our mission to reach our full potential, making it to the Regional Finals in 2025 for the first time in 27 years.

In 2021-2022, Matt Hazzard was hired as the new Head Women's Coach, winning a conference championship in the first year. In 2025, the Generals advanced to the Region III Championship game and were ranked as high as #12 in the NJCAA Division 3 Women's Basketball national poll.

Each year, coaches recruit heavily, but also welcome students to team tryouts which are held in early October and a challenging schedule begins in November and continues through February. We hope you’ll be among us!

Herkimer College team members are held extremely accountable in the classroom and offered a diverse array of academic support services – and it shows. In recent years, 90% of our players have graduated or successfully transferred to four-year institutions.

The Varsity Gymnasium at Herkimer College is one of the top gymnasiums in the region.

Our opportunities.

As one of the top junior college programs in the country, our students benefit from exposure to many of the best four-year schools. Students are also able to explore their other athletic interests as it is common for Herkimer College players to be multi-sport athletes.
